A brief history on what happened to get me off on this project. A mate of mine asked me to see if I could track down a Meyers Manx body / buggy for him. So I started asking around. Mike Sharp from Toowoomba then offered up a MK 1 SWB Supa Sports buggy. I checked with the guy, but he was set on a Manx. Then I got thinking .. needless to say I went for a drive a few days later and drove home with what once resembled a buggy. Then as I sat looking at her and dreaming of running kombi gearboxes, irs big tires and type IV 2L engines , I decided STOP .. this must be done on the cheap. So I flopped out the Trading post and stated reading, then there it was a 1974 ?? VW Baja classed as an unfinished project for $650. So I gave him a ring and he told me all about how he had totally rebuilt the floor pan new brakes, sandblasted, primed, new king pin front end new rear tires and oh yeah there was a compliance plate for a Manx Buggy with it. So I went had a look and $250 later I was the proud owner of 2 Baja beetles of 1958 era. In with the deal was a fresh 1200cc single port engine, 12V generator, new clutch and pressure plate, 2 x engine cages,1 x front bar, sports steering wheel, type 3 rear drums, and a reco gerabox. My cheap buggy plans were going very very well.
MY Plan
Body MK1 Supa Sports SWB buggy
Chassis 1958 Kingpin / swing axle, sandblasted and rustproofed (soon to be shortened)
Brakes type 3 5 stud rear, beetle 5 stud front
Engine fresh 1200cc single port
Gearbox type 1 swing axle modified to run 12V flywheel.
Seats Cobra racing bucket, fixed back ($20 from swap meet 3 months ago)
Wheels 265 x 65 x 15 " rears and 215 x 65 x 14 front ( came with Baja)
If all goes well she should be on the road before Christmas. I will be updating this as I get time to work on the buggy. I will take it step by step with photos
